Consuming More Virgin Olive Oil in Diet Can Benefit Overall Health

In 2013, 1 in 3 American adults, or nearly 67 million Americans, have high blood pressure, one of the risk factors that can lead to coronary heart disease. Only about half of people with high blood pressure are in control of their conditions, which makes them more under threat of recurring kidney disease, stroke, and heart attack or failure.

More than adding texture and enhancing the flavors of food, organic virgin olive oil also provides several health benefits that boost one’s lifestyle. An article from the Tech Times reveals a study regarding its value in lowering one’s blood pressure:

“Several studies have shown that a Mediterranean-style diet, which is high in vegetables and olive oil, can help lower blood pressure and reduce risks for heart disease.

For the new study “Protection from hypertension in mice by the Mediterranean diet is mediated by nitro fatty acid inhibition of soluble epoxide hydrolase” published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) on May 19, Philip Eaton, from Kings College London, and his colleagues used genetically engineered mice to better understand how the Mediterranean diet can help lower blood pressure and prevent heart disease.

They found that when extra-virgin olive oil is consumed together with vegetables, just as in a Mediterranean diet, it forms nitro fatty acids. These fatty acids help reduce hypertension by blocking epoxide hydrolase, an enzyme involved in regulating blood pressure.”

The benefits of incorporating olive oils in most people’s daily diet can certainly be considered great news for Americans who want to live longer and healthier. Aside from lowering blood pressure and lessening risks of heart disease, regular consumption of olive oil can decrease chances of cancer because of its abundance of antioxidants that get rid of free radicals. It can also moderate inflammation, which is one of the major causes of chronic conditions like hypertension, kidney disease, and cardiovascular disease.

Those who want to achieve a Mediterranean diet should visit Orange County wholesale gourmet suppliers like Olive Oil & Beyond to provide them class A quality food and ingredients brimming with flavors, nutrients and antioxidants.
